Scouts and Cubs from 1st Hemyock Scout Group were among more than 1,000 youngsters disappointed when the camp they were attending was cancelled due to bad weather. The scouting centenary camp held in the grounds of Powderham Castle was one of many taking place across the country to celebrate 100 years of scouting. It was meant to take place from Friday, May 25 to Monday, May 28, but was cancelled on the Sunday. The camp was attended by youngsters from Tiverton and District, East Devon District, and Exmouth and Budleigh Salterton District groups.
Activities which relied on good weather, such as archery, abseiling and kayaking had to be cancelled due to high winds and torrential rain.
Julie Betteridge, Tiverton and District's assistant district commissioner for Cubs, helped organise the event and said safety was the main priority.
She said: "The organisers felt it was unsafe to continue, and gave each group responsibility for deciding whether to pack up or stay on site.
"There was a safety issue, not only with the high winds, but the risk of hypothermia from the wind and rain."
