A number of past leaders of the Scout and Guide Associations attended the special morning service at St Mary’s, Hemyock which celebrated the Centenary Year of Scouting as well as the 35 year link with a Scout group in Denmark.

Prior to the service present day members paraded in pouring rain to the church with flags carried by Holli Pinder (Union), Chris Moon (Scout), Luke Parker (Cubs), Amie Sellick (Danish) and Antonia Doble (Brownies)

The service was conducted by Rev David Sherwood who blessed all those who would be travelling to Denmark at the weekend for a 2 week holiday with their Danish counterparts. The Lesson was read by Sandra Aldworth (Group Executive Chair) and readings given by Scouts Jasmine Jordan, Chris Moon, Holli Pinder, Amie Sellick and Jack Watts. A past Guider, Janice Bawler read the prayers she had written especially for the service and John Northam an ex leader of 1st Hemyock Scouts, who was in a Danish uniform spoke briefly of how the link with Denmark had begun with Ron ‘Skip’ Lowman, MBE and what a great inspiration he had been to the Scouting Movement.

After leading the Scouts in the renewal of their Promise Julie Betteridge, Assistant District Commissioner for Cub Scouts, invested Rev Sherwood as the Groups Chaplin as he made his Scout Promise and received his scarf.

The bell ringers of the parish church will be attempting to ring a Quarter Peal on Thursday (19th) to celebrate the centenary of Scouting.
