The Annual Club BBQ held at the Clubhouse on Saturday, July 25th was a great success. Over 60 members, family and friends came along to enjoy the fun and food. Fortunately it was a lovely calm and sunny evening which was a rarity in July, and we were able to sit outside until quite late.

John Bendle had organised some intriguing bowling competitions. Four rinks were set out with different themes and it was unusual to see Teddy Bears, rows of skittles made out of painted lemonade bottles, a soft toy octopus and a cardboard box on the Green. They were designed to test our drawing ability but were fun at the same time for bowlers, novices and children alike. People were certainly very keen and were queuing up again and again to try to improve their previous score. At £1 a round this made a good profit for the club.

Together with the good food and open Bar this made for a good social evening. Saturday August 8th was devoted to the club Triples Competition. Eight teams had entered and two rounds were able to be played, leaving the two finalists to battle it out on Finals Day at the end of the month. The Competition Secretary, Bob Tennant, and his wife Christine, provided all competitors with a light salad lunch with meats and cheese, which was greatly appreciated. During the morning we were also treated to a flypast of the Red Arrows, but Bob said he had nothing to do with that!

Congratulations to two of our lady bowlers, Sue Trott and Flo Chown who have now gained sufficient points in County and club competitions for their names to be put forward for the award of a County Badge, and therefore they would then be eligible to play in County matches. Hemyock have also done well in the team league tables. The Men's Over 60's team finished 2nd in their division and will be promoted again next season. The Ladies Team finished at the top of the President's Trophy League and will be awarded the Trophy for the third year running, which is quite an achievement!

The last couple of weeks of the season have been very busy with 'Friendly matches' but it was good to enjoy some more sunshine at last.

The final day of the season we call Closure of the Green and this will be a light hearted bowling afternoon for club members with a 'Bring and Share' lunch on Sunday 20th of September. It is always with regret that yet another outdoor season is over and we have to wait until next year. Of course, things don't stop completely and there is always a lot of work to be done on the Green and around the clubhouse. The Annual Dinner and presentation of trophies for club competition winners is on Friday 16th October at Oake Manor golf club, and the AGM is on Monday 26th October at the clubhouse at 7.30pm.
