Bowls Club News

Bowls ClubThis year Hemyock Ladies won the President's Trophy League for the third year running. Maureen Robertson came to the club, to present her trophy which she introduced seventeen years ago which marks her time as President of the Devon Lady Bowlers Association. She introduced an evening league aimed to provide ladies of bowling clubs in near to her club in Tiverton, who were not available during the day,
with competitive bowling. She originally thought that perhaps it would last for 5 or 6 years but it is still going strong. Maureen also gave each of the ladies in the team a surprise gift. She had brought with her a selection of delicate beaded necklaces, of her own making, in a variety of colours, for us to choose from.

The summer season finished on Sunday 20th September with a members competition day organised by Bob Tennant. Thirty people attended and enjoyed the sunshine, friendship and, of course, the bowling. The usual 'Bring and Share' refreshments with the bar open, was a good end to the afternoon.

As soon as season ended work started on the Green. A lot of work goes on during the winter season to prepare for next year.

The annual dinner and presentation of trophies for the competition winners was held at the Oake Manor Golf Club, with a good attendance of 48 members. After an excellent 3 course meal, the trophies were presented to the winners by President Helen Lancaster.

Next was the Annual General Meeting with lots to discuss, particularly the change to the Constitution resulting from the changes happening nationally due to the amalgamation of the men's and ladies associations. The National association is now called 'Bowls England' and we now go under the banner of 'Bowls Devon'.

Helen Lancaster, the retiring President was thanked for her loyalty and hard work during the past 3 years and the new President Gill Chown was welcomed to his new office.

Finally the committee are arranging a members Christmas party in the clubhouse on Saturday December 12th. A traditional theme with food, puzzles and games - tickets £5 a head and numbers limited to 40.
