1st Hemyock Scout Group News

Scouts

Hello again, its Rikki here. It does not seem like two months ago that I last wrote to you. Anyway, I am pleased to be able to report that the Group has been really active and looking forward to the lovely light summer evenings for our meetings.

Obviously one of the recent highlights was the District St Georges Day Parade in Tiverton with a super service in St Peters Church. The leaders were really proud of the turnout of 1st Hemyock, they were all smart and paraded well. It was an excellent day with lots attending from other groups in the District. It must also be said that it was great to see the Police Cadets there also looking smart. Our young people did us proud!

Back in March our cub scouts attended the District Challenge at Caddihoe. This involved traditional scouting skills including cooking, on open fires of course, fire lighting using no matches, pioneering, tent pitching. As I said it was a challenge and I am pleased to say that we came first. Well done to all of our cubs that attended. Also, not to be outdone the scouts attended Woodjam weekend which was also a challenge of scouting skills. The result here was very close with only four points between first and third. We came third but our young people enjoyed themselves, which is what scouting is all about.

Some of our members via school took part in the Exmoor challenge, which involved a 16 mile hike across rough terrain. They all completed the course. Well done to them.

Julie says thank you to all who collected Tesco vouchers for us. They have appeared through her letter box and I think even delivered by our post lady! We have had a look at the catalogue of things that we can get with the vouchers and we will probably get a digital camera which can be used by all sections of the group. Again many thanks to you all.

Its not long now to the visit from our friends in Tonder, Denmark. They arrive on 24th July and we will be camping at Caddihoe followed by home hospitality with our group members. On 1st August we will be joining Rev Sherwood and the congregation at St Marys Hemyock. Please join us if you can, you will be very welcome.

We do unfortunately have a waiting list of young people who would love to join us, the number is now approaching twenty. We are working towards forming another pack to alleviate the situation. Obviously the critical point is leaders, we are also working on this. But, if there is anyone out there who would like to become a leader or helper, please have a chat with Julie or me, our numbers are on the back page.

Finally, our get together for old boys and girls of the last fifty years will be on 17th October with a service at St Marys, followed by a chin wag in the Catherine Wheel. All you old members out there do join us if you can.

Well, that's it for now. Hope I haven't gone on too much! Do enjoy the light summer evenings, we certainly will!

Rikki.
