Hemyock Men can now tell the difference between a reactor and a turbine, a condenser and a control rod. This was learned as part of their induction visit to Hinckley Point nuclear power station recently.

The men were fully kitted out, introduced to the company background and ethos and then given a thorough safety briefing before being shown around the plant.

Every stage of power generation was explained to them as part of the tour led by Dave Westmore who is a member of the mangagement team at Hinckley. The simulated control room was included in the visit, which looked every bit the real thing, which allowed staff the chance to practice their skills especially duirng a simulated emergency.

Hinckley Point is a major local employer including an excellent apprenticeship scheme and puts around 30 million pounds into the local economy. Staff enthusiastically answered questions and Hemyock Men were fully assured that Homer Simpson does not work at Hinckley Point, although the Men thought that Mr Westmore bore an uncanny resemblance.
