There was a good attendance for the opening day of the new outdoor season at Hemyock bowling Club. In the absence of both the President and the Chairman members were welcomed by the Vice Chairman John Bendle. Relatives of the late Les Wannell, who had been a member of the club for about 20 years, were to be there to present a seat in his memory but they had been detained in Portugal due to the cancellation of flights because of the volcanic dust cloud. John thanked the Green keeper Martin Dear and his helpers for all their hard work in getting the Green ready for play, before handing over to Bob Tennant who was organising the order of play for the afternoon.

Outdoor Bowlers will soon be emerging again to enjoy the vagaries of the weather and, hopefully, some good bowling. The start of the season at Hemyock is on Sunday, April 18th when all members are invited to what is called 'The Opening of The Green'. This is always a fun afternoon and I am sure Bob Tennant, who will be organising the afternoons play, will devise some interesting and challenging games for us. As usual, members have been asked to bring a contribution for the 'Bring and Share' tea. As you will see from the advert in this edition there will be some 'Open Days' for new bowlers. Do come along if you are at all interested as these sessions are always fun and it will only cost you £2 per session.

This year Hemyock Ladies won the President's Trophy League for the third year running. Maureen Robertson came to the club, to present her trophy which she introduced seventeen years ago which marks her time as President of the Devon Lady Bowlers Association. She introduced an evening league aimed to provide ladies of bowling clubs in near to her club in Tiverton, who were not available during the day,
with competitive bowling. She originally thought that perhaps it would last for 5 or 6 years but it is still going strong. Maureen also gave each of the ladies in the team a surprise gift. She had brought with her a selection of delicate beaded necklaces, of her own making, in a variety of colours, for us to choose from.

The Annual Club BBQ held at the Clubhouse on Saturday, July 25th was a great success. Over 60 members, family and friends came along to enjoy the fun and food. Fortunately it was a lovely calm and sunny evening which was a rarity in July, and we were able to sit outside until quite late.

It hardly seems possible that we are so far into the season but, thankfully, we are enjoying better bowling weather this year. We have had a full programme of friendly matches against clubs from around the area, which are more for fun without so much emphasis on the result.

How nice it is to be bowling outside once again! Our President, Helen Lancaster, said "This is what we have all been waiting for" when she welcomed members to the first bowling meeting of the new season on Saturday April 25th.

Now that most of the winter is over we are beginning to look forward to another season of outdoor bowling and The Green had its first cut of the year during the third week of February, and a dressing of fertilizer and iron treatment were applied. The new season starts on Saturday, April 25th, but before that it is hoped to hold a working party to lift and relay uneven paving slabs around the perimeter of The Green.

As the Bowling Club is only really active during the summer months there is very little to report this time. There are maintenance jobs to be done on the Green and its surrounds and to the clubhouse itself, of course.

The Green at Hemyock closed on Sunday, September 21st with a friendly competition among members, followed by a 'Bring and Share' tea which always produces a really good spread. Once the bowling has finished there is a lot of maintenance work to be done on the Green itself and Green keeper, Martin Dear, asked for volunteers to assist in this work.

What a summer we are all saying and it has certainly affected the bowling this year with many cancelled or rearranged matches. Indeed it was difficult to get all the club competition rounds completed in time for Finals Day. A second day had been marked on the fixture card to finish the competitions but even this was rained off, so, as yet, I cannot give you the complete list of winners. It will have to wait until the next edition.
