Thank you to all those of you who supported our Spring Fayre last Saturday - we were completely overwhelmed by the numbers and apologize to any of you who did not manage to get the plants you hoped for. I’m sure it is something that we will do again and next time we will ensure a plentiful supply!! Our thanks also to members who kindly donated plants for us to sell, in particular Jane Smith who had been exceedingly busy over the past few months potting up a huge variety of plants and also to Sandra for providing most welcome cups of coffee and cake.

Hemyock Gardeners’ Association have donated a dozen packets of Sunflower Seeds to Hemyock Primary School. The seeds supplied by Dobies of Paignton will be sown and grown by the children. Seed compost and pots have also been given to the school to enable the children to get sowing right away. It is hoped that a huge number of sunflowers will bloom in and around Hemyock as a result! If all goes to plan, the children will be encouraged to bring their sunflowers along to the Gardeners’ Association Autumn Show in the Parish Hall, Hemyock, on Saturday 4 September 2010. This novelty class in the Show is open to all.

I was very saddened to learn on my return from holiday that one of our members, Mac, had died. Mac and Joyce were two of the people I first met in the Post Office when I moved here five years ago and in fact Joyce invited me to the next meeting of the Gardeners’ Association. Personally I will miss the musical entertainment Mac used to provide at our social evening and the contributions he made to all our Committee Meetings. He was a lovely man who will be missed.

A Happy New Year to you all!
Sadly, due to the weather, our social evening in January had to be cancelled so we have missed out on the quizzes organized for us by Christine and Brenda and the great entertainment as usual from Mac and Paul. Maybe we will be able to slot these items in later in the year.

I am having to write this report a little early as I am off to "supervise" the grandchildren!! The weather today is fabulous, a welcome sight of blue sky and sun after the horrendous gales and rain of the past few days.

The Pottinger Cup is the 'Mastermind' for local gardeners and is keenly fought over each year. This year the competition was held at the beautiful new Burlescombe and Westleigh Hall on Wednesday 21 October. There were teams from Burlescombe, Sampford Peverall, Willand. Hemyock traditionally does well in the competion and this year we won.
The picture shows the winning team, Left to Right; Sue Scantlebury, Jane Smith, Jane Atlee, Christine Carver.

A large number of people attended the Autumn Show this year ensuring that, despite the fact that exhibit numbers were down, a very successful day was enjoyed by all. The Ploughmans Lunches - a new idea - were very well received and we would hope to repeat this at future events. Many thanks go to Paul and Sandra for all their hard work providing these (and the idea!) and also to all the members who helped make the day, particularly of course Show Secretary Lizzie who has much to do, a lot behind the scenes so to speak!

We have enjoyed two garden visits so far this year. Unfortunately I had to miss the first one to Kia-Ora Farm and Gardens as I was away on holiday but I gather everyone had a good time, despite a rather wet evening, and enjoyed a lovely cream tea!

Despite the snow and very wintry weather leading up to the Spring Show, as usual our members managed to overcome all the difficulties and provide a wonderful display of spring flowers.

A Happy New Year to you all. As usual, Joyce came up with another interesting speaker for our December meeting - Mr William Bennett spoke on gardening and the law - so we are all now much more informed as to what we should or shouldn't do to maintain peaceful harmony with our neighbours.

The miserable weather continues so difficult to get out into the garden to do all the jobs that we know we should be doing at this time of the year.

Our final visit of the summer took place in August when we visited the Sutton Seeds Trial Grounds - an extremely interesting and informative evening and well worth the journey. Tony Spiller (one of our speakers earlier this year and whose garden we also visited) was quite correct when he said it was a great place to visit. I think we all left feeling we had learnt something and great to have the lovely "goody" bags which they provided.
