Welcome to Hemyock
Wednesday, September 08 2010 @ 10:14 AM BST Hemyock Men Hemyock Men is a fantastic resource for local men. We invite great speakers who have in the past included the Bishop of Exeter, A Professor of Gentics, a Chief Constable, a Ships Captain to name but a few. Although Hemyock Men is run by Hemyock Baptist Church, you don't have to be a Churchgoer to attend Hemyock Men. Meetings are normally held Monthly on the 4th Saturday at the Catherine Wheel in Hemyock at 10.30 am. Occasionally we go for a full breakfast and an earlier time of 9.00 am. Sometimes, we visit places of interest such as Rolls Royce in Bristol. For future events see the Calendar. Varied Programme For Mens Breakfasts
Erwin & the Pope
![]() What does Joseph Ratzinger (the current Pope - Benedict XVI) appear to have in common with Erwin Stahlberg of Wellington? Why was Erwin still a prisoner of war in 1948? Hemyock Men found out the answer to the first question, during their breakfast at the Catherine Wheel last Saturday (24th), but the second question continues to elude even Mr Stahlberg.
Science & Faith
![]() Barry Jennings was undoubtedly just the right person to talk on issues of science and faith to Hemyock Men. Barry retired from being Research Director at English China Clays and Research professor at Reading University as well as being a visiting Fellow at several Universities before being ordained into the Church of England.
Hemyock Men Christmas Breakfast
![]() Over 60 chaps gathered at the Catherine Wheel pub in Hemyock for breakfast last Saturday (12th) to hear Carl Beech, who leads Christian Vision for Men the fast growing national movement, of which Hemyock Men is a member. Carl told the group that CVM is a catalyst for an emerging band of brothers across the UK who want to see the nation won for Jesus Christ, and getting them gripped and excited by their faith and equipped to live an adventure.
Hemyock Men Recycled
![]() Nowadays, we are all aware that we need to reduce our impact upon the environment, whether as businesses or consumers. Hemyock Men had a close up visit to one of the clearest examples of re-use of materials when they visited the St Regis recycled paper mill in Cullompton. Every year St Regis mills take in c. 1.3 million tonnes of used cardboard and paper and turn it into high quality recycled paper products. Which means that they are one of the biggest recycling operations in Europe. All of their products are 100% recycled and 100% recyclable. In fact, the recycling loop is so efficient that the fibres in one corrugated box can be used to make another within 14 days!
Hemyock Goes To Hinckley
Hemyock Men can now tell the difference between a reactor and a turbine, a condenser and a control rod. This was learned as part of their induction visit to Hinckley Point nuclear power station recently. The men were fully kitted out, introduced to the company background and ethos and then given a thorough safety briefing before being shown around the plant. Ending The Race Well
Walking with Elephants
Around 50 members of Hemyock Men welcomed South African speaker Dave Powrie, a man who had a very big subject to talk about. After a great breakfast at the Catherine Wheel, Dave fascinated the group with his knowledge of working with elephants close up. Researching behavioural patterns, getting involved with post contraception trials on female elephants, understanding how the elephant family works. This meant he would go on foot, following the breeding herds all day long, to note behaviour and interactions and being just a little aware of the lions and snakes, knowing that elephants too can turn and charge without giving much warning.
Stars in their eyes
Scandal! 'God Prefers Grubby Tabloids'
Hemyock Men had an eye-opening encounter with a tabloid scandal-monger known on Fleet Street as "Mr Totty". Journalist James Hastings raised eyebrows when he revealed how he had been chased by a maniac wielding a meat cleaver, counted bodies hanging in trees at Lockerbie, met Hollywood's biggest and best stars, and used his skills to smuggle God into the heart of Britain's grubbiest tabloids.Principles of Business Success
Alan Thompson heads up Toshiba’s Computing Businesses for Europe, Middle East and Africa as Executive Vice President. He will be speaking about Principles of Business Success at a Hemyock Men breakfast on Saturday 24th May.
