Welcome to Hemyock Tuesday, May 21 2013 @ 02:40 AM BST
Hemyock Women Hemyock Women is the really interesting and fun side of what the ladies do at Hemyock Baptist Church. We meet at the local pub, drink coffee, hear interesting speakers, visit places together and generally prove that women who call themselves Christian are not dull. You don't have to be a Christian or a Church goer to attend, but we think that you will find every reason for wanting to take a closer look at what Christians really believe. For future events see the Calendar.

Most trainee teachers leave college and join a UK school in the initial stage of their career. Not so Richard Whiteside whose first job after training was to teach at a school in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. As a keen photographer, he was also able to assist the BBC to film Birds of Paradise which appeared in a David Attenborough programme.
Richard was telling his story to Hemyock Women about three years spent in Papua New Guinea which is 70% tropical rain forest and a country 4 times the size of the UK with a population of just 7million people. There are many different tribes speaking over 700 indigenous languages Thankfully most of them also speak pigeon English so that they can communicate with each other.

Hemyock Women enjoyed supper together at Hemyock Baptist Church on Thursday evening whilst learning how to improve their everyday relationships. Chris Grimshaw, who worked for 30 years as a veterinary surgeon, and is now teaching ‘People Relationship skills’, spoke of how the breakdown of relationships affects all of us at some point in our lives, but how with a few core skills break downs and break ups can be avoided.

Along with many other town centres on a Saturday night, Taunton has become a more fun, less tense place to be thanks to the work of every-day people known as the “Street Pastors”. And the police are really endorsing the project reporting that the streets are now a safer place especially for women and vulnerable young people. Following that success people are now in training to form a new Street Pastor team for Wellington town centre.

Woolworths may have gone with their "pic & mix" counter, but designer babies are here to stay. Every parent looks forward to the birth of their baby hoping that it will be perfect. Can modern science now remove all the risk in childbirth?

Around 20 members of Hemyock Women were given a behind the scenes tour of Exeter Cathedral in October (25th). Their tour guide Winifred gave them an informative talk of the early days of the history of the Cathedral. She explained how the Cathedral originated as a Saxon Minster, but then lost its monastic status in 1050. The third Bishop of the Cathedral, Bronscombe, who was a Norman, started rebuilding the Cathedral in 1270 which was then completed in 1369. Sadly, in 1942 the Cathedral suffered bomb damage, resulting in some of the beautiful stained glass windows being lost.
