In June the members enjoyed a challenging Treasure Hunt around the village. This was organised by Julie and Elaine. Luckily, the weather was favourable as some members took a long time to complete their tasks. The winning team was 'The Young Ones.' All were able to enjoy the meal provided at the Ivy Café which is conveniently situated in the centre of Hemyock. Lynn thanked all who took part and reminded members that the next Meeting will be on July 1st at 7.30 pm in the Parish Hall when Neil Moralee will give a talk which he calls 'Harley and me in the USA.' As well as the competition for 'a flower from the garden' there is another for a 'Holiday Snap.' Members were welcomed to the July meeting by the President, Lynn Taylor. Instead of being energetic like they were in June when they walked around the Village on a Brain Testing Treasure Hunt, members sat back and enjoyed the experiences of Neil Moralee who had travelled from Orlando to San Francisco on a Harley Davidson motorbike. He wanted to do something challenging to celebrate his 50th Birthday. He took 17 days to travel the 4,500 miles. Within a day he had been knocked off his very heavy 'Road King' by someone going through a red light and continued the journey with a broken toe and cracked ribs on a replacement motorbike. He saw devastation in Alabama, was surprised at 5 miles per hour speed limits in Mississippi, into Louisiana then Arkansas. He was pursued by tornadoes, came across snow and was into California which seemed so lush after the barrenness of the desert. Into Yosimite National Park which is the size of Wales and soon he was in San Francisco.
After the illustrated talk by Neil, it was down to business. Plans were made for the Mid Devon Show exhibit and also the arrangements for the visit to Torquay to see a show on July 19th. There were also discussions about the Autumn Group Meeting being held at Hemyock on November 6th as well as the WI stand at the village show on July 5th. There will be a committee meeting at Lynn's on July
22nd at 7.30.
Brenda Calcraft gave her account of the meeting she had attended at Liverpool .She handed Lynn a sapling oak .5,000 of these were given to the delegates... sponsored by Sainsburys. Competition winners were Cindy and Brenda. Instead of a usual monthly meeting in August, there will be a bring and share supper in Sandra and Paul Featherstone's garden.
