A new forestry apprenticeship scheme is set to start in the Blackdown Hills. The programme is being run by The Forestry Commission, in partnership with The Silvanus Trust, Bicton College, and leading private employers from the forestry sector.
The apprenticeship programme will combine learning in the workplace with practical training resulting in a nationally recognised NVQ qualification (Level 2 Forestry) along with national certificates of competency in topics such as chainsaw operation and pesticide application. The courses will be delivered by Bicton College, which has a long-established record of training in forestry and countryside skills.
Two apprenticeship vacancies will be hosted by the Forestry Commission in the Blackdown Hills AONB as part of the Neroche Scheme. Apprentices will have the opportunity to put their training into practice and learn specialist forestry skills. The organisers would like to hear now from practical people who enjoy working outdoors and are looking to start a career in forestry or countryside management.
Funding for this programme has been secured from the Forestry Commission and ‘Making it Local', a locally managed grant scheme in the Blackdown Hills and East Devon areas, which incorporates funding from the EU, DEFRA, SWRDA and LEADER. Across the whole project area there are a total of five vacancies for this two-year programme.
Recruitment onto the programme began on 16th October so, if you are interested, get in touch now with Jane Hart, at The Silvanus Trust, on 01752 846400 or email jane.hart@silvanus.org.uk
