Make Hay While the Sun Shines & other stories from Hemyock, is a new book by Brian Clist who has lived and worked all his life in the village. Its publication has been made possible by the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty's Sustainable Development Fund. Throughout his life Brian has spent a lot of time reading and researching the history of Hemyock and his book is an eclectic mix of his findings coupled with more personal memories. It covers a variety of themes, including an account of the development of haymaking from the use of the scythe to the big baler, as well as chapters on Hemyock during the Second World War and extracts from the Parish records.
The book also contains fifty fascinating illustrations that bring Brian's descriptions to life - from old family photographs to 100 year old election material. 'Make Hay While the Sun Shines' truly gives a great insight into times gone by and, as Chris Dracott says, "should certainly be on the shelves of anyone with an interest in the history and, equally importantly, the social history of Hemyock."
