Members and friends of St Mary's Guild left Hemyock at 9:30 Wednesday June 6th for their outing. The venue this year was Crediton Parish Church for their floral tribute to 100 years of broadcasting.

We stopped at Bickleigh Mill for morning coffee, the resident peacock at the mill turned out to be the star attraction. He seemed to know he was being photographed and boy, did he preen and strut his stuff.

On the 15th of July, we had a Parade Service at St. Mary's in Hemyock to celebrate the centenary of the Scout Movement. During the service, the scouts read some short poems about different aspect of life, and one of them was called 'Rest' by P Clifton.

Pumpkins Playpark Completed!

A campaign to provide Hemyock with a children's play area that started 15 years ago has finally come to fruition.  Jayne McLintock, who founded the Pumpkins Playpark committee in 1992, officially presented the new timber playground to the Village on Saturday, July 7.

The wooden park, built by Brookridge Timber, consists of monkey bars, slides, a climbing wall, climbing ropes, and a high-level walkway that leads to a hut.

Hampton Court Success For Hemyock Nursery

A Hemyock Nursery has won an award at this year's Hampton Court Flower Show.  The largest annual flower show in the world showcased its best crop of gardens in 18 years, with 10 RHS gold medals announced earlier this week.

Despite overcast skies and another event being held  in the village the annual Summer Fete organised by St Mary’s Parish Church was a great success raising over £1,800.

Members of St Mary's Church, Hemyock with Culm Davy Chapel are busy preparing for their annual Summer Fair and hoping for a dry day.

The event, which will run from 10am - 5pm will be held at the Recreation Field on Saturday, July 14, and will have all the usual stalls and attractions.

Mid Devon District Council has been in some turmoil recently , with many new Councillors and the placing of the Council under more direct central government supervision.

Margaret Squires has taken over as the new Chairman of MDDC and a completely new structure for the Council looks imminent.

Despite the assurances given by Mr Guscott, the Mid Devon District Council’s Chief Planning Officer, that there would be no more developments in Hemyock for 10-15 years, it was revealed by Frank Rosamond, the MDCC elected Member covering this area on the MDDC that MDDC has to consider some possible suitable sites for affordable housing within the District that might be required up to 2026.

The subject of the street lighting in Hemyock came up at the Parish Council Meeting on 4th July. 

Andy Ware from Devon County Council gave the Parish Council a briefing on their plans to alter the lighting to reduce DCC’s carbon footprint as they have calculated that street lighting is one of their major contributors to carbon usage. DCC have put money aside to reduce their use of fossil fuels.

Bitterly cold with sunny spells and frequent showers, these heavy and blustery with the risk of hail and thunder. Showers will turn increasingly wintry with snow perhaps settling over the hills. Windy with gales, especially around coasts and hills later. Maximum Temperature 7 °C.

Wintry showers will continue overnight, leading to some accumulations over the hills. It will remain windy with gales or severe gales, especially in the far southwest. Minimum Temperature 1 °C.

Wednesday:

Cold, with strong winds easing and wintry showers steadily reducing and largely turning back to rain. However, it will become windy again later, with heavy rain arriving overnight. Maximum Temperature 8 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Stormy early on Thursday, with rain, hill snow and severe gales. Thereafter, a return to sunshine and wintry showers. Drier and sunnier on Saturday.
