We are all sadden with the loss of a loved one but the shock and sorrow felt by many on hearing of Lorna Pinder's sudden death has been great.17 year old Lorna was a pupil at Richard Huish College and a vibrant young lady who will be missed by many. We send our love, prayers and sympathy to her family and friends. We also remember the families of others who have recently lost a loved one including that of Mary Parsons (nee Perrott) who has passed away following a long illness and Peggy Granger. A devout Catholic, Peggy, who moved to Wellington a few years ago, will be remembered by many as the guardian of the Roman Catholic Church which stood in Station Road. She was proud of her Welsh ancestry and many people benefited from her excellent dressmaking skills.
Ernie Carmen, Oliver Cartledge, Amie Sellick and John Doble are amongst those who have recently needed hospital treatment. We wish them, and others known to us, who are unwell a speedy recovery.
On a happier note we hear that Les and Barbara Bowden have become great grandparents and that Mary and Malcolm Beal have another grandchild, Levi, a son for Sarah and Trevor.
We seem to be having a typically 'British Summer' - if there is such a thing! The flash floods that hit the area at the end of May caused huge problems for many, including St Mary's and the Catherine Wheel. In the midst of redecoration the parish church the entrance and aisles were a sea of squelchy mud with debris all over the grounds whilst Geoff could be seen trying to dry carpets outside of the
pub. Thanks must go to the people involved in the various clean up operations around the village.
The parish church had hoped for better weather for their annual summer fair but it was not to be as winds blew and the heavens opened - but being British and great supporters of local events villagers attended the fete throughout the day. The children from one class at the primary school gave a super display of country dancing during one of the dry periods being suitable rewarded by their teacher with an ice cream. School summer holidays will be being enjoyed by children and staff alike by the time this is printed. The last weeks of term always see a large number of fun activities taking place some of which are enjoyed by parents as much as the young people so our thanks to all those involved in making these happen.
Congratulations to the various local youngsters who are achieving success in a wide range of activities. Included in this is Vicki Sherwood who was recently selected to be one of two representatives from Uffculme School at the South West Food and Drink competition held at Teign School where they had to design and make a sausage.
I was one of those on the original committee when the possibility of Hemyock twinning with an area in France was first discussed. It is good to hear this has now been formalised and of the success it is enjoying along with the friendships shared by many families in both countries.
Finally a warm welcome to all who have chosen to holiday in the area - we do hope you will enjoy some warm weather as you explore our beautiful countryside - and to those people who have moved here during the last couple of months.
