Archived Stories Hemyock Tennis Club is game and set for 2007. This is the first season the club has been able to properly use its three new courts on Longmead Field, Hemyock. Committee member Julie Steed said: "We have had them since last year, but we couldn't play on them much because it was so hot."

The club, which has about 100 junior and senior members, will be running coaching sessions for senior beginners and children from Tuesday, April 10 until Saturday, April 14.

Julie, of Culmstock Road, said: "It's an old club with new courts, and we want new members. There are the coaching sessions coming up, then we are hoping to have a tournament, maybe in June, to raise money for charity and attract people into the club."

The coaching will cost £20 per person for five sessions. If people go to the sessions then want to join the club, they will get a discount on membership.

By September, the club hopes to have a permanent home in the shape of a pavilion. Along with the courts, it is part of the Longmead development, which includes two football pitches, a multi-use games area, and a children's play area.

Players can hire the courts for £3 an hour through the village's Spar store, and club sessions run every Saturday morning from 10.30am.

Julie said: "People can have a game and get a feel for it. If they don't want to join the club they can hire a court themselves."

The 55-year-old mother of two, who has been playing tennis "for donkey's years" encouraged people to try it out.

She said: "It's a great way of spending a nice morning or afternoon, and a good reason for running around outside."
