Heathland in the Blackdown Hills and surrounding area is the subject of a new book on sale now. Heathland in East Devon and the Blackdown Hills, has been produced thanks to money from the Heritage Lottery Fund and about 1,600 copies have been distributed across the South West, mainly for educational use.
The fund has now granted permission for the 900 or so remaining copies to go on sale in bookshops in the area.
The 80-page publication was written by David Allen, a member of the Blackdown Hills AONB Partnership management group. It is a sequel to his Wild Flowers of the East Devon Coast and focuses on the natural history of the area's lowland heaths.
Caroline Newcombe, the Sustainable Development Fund administrator at the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Hemyock, said it had been "extremely popular."
She said: "It appeals to specialists, amateurs, and the general public, has beautiful illustrations and is written in an accessible style."
The Blackdown Hills AONB initially published the book as a one-off, but projects co-ordinator Carmel Wilkinson now hopes it will mark the start of a whole series.
