The latest meeting of the Hemyock WI was held in Forbes Lounge, Hemyock on April 1 with Lyn Taylor presiding.
After the usual business of apologies and minutes, etc, names were taken for those wishing to attend the group meeting on April 10 at Clayhidon. Lyn read the sonnet composed by a group of "would-be" poets over a glass of wine, which will be Hemyock's entry in the group competition. There was then a report of the visit to the European Parliament by Brenda Calcraft. Lyn asked for the wall hanging squares to be completed and returned to her as soon as possible. It was agreed to take a stall at the church fete in July and also to participate in the Mid Devon Show. As Hemyock has to host the autumn group meeting, a sub-committee was formed and they will meet at the pub on May 20.
Elaine and Julie then had members wracking their brains over a competition to find the names of confectionery which were well jumbled up. As if this was not enough, the mystery objects brought along for the competion also had to be identified. These included such items as a glove stretcher, a South African donkey whip, an aeronautical screwdriver and others. Brenda won the chocolates for the most right answers.
Karen was presented with a crocus vase for gaining most points last year in the competitions. Julie's geranium was this month's winning flower.
The next meeting will be on Tuesday, May 6, from 7.30pm when Raymond Budd will give a talk on 'Reminisences of the Black and White Minstrel Show'. Votes will be taken on the resolutions for discussion at the annual meeting in Liverpool. Members will all receive the relevant information thanks to Julie. Further details from Brenda Calcraft on 01823 681592.
