Archived Stories Hemyock has fought off competition from around the county to be declared  Devon Calor ‘Village of the Year’ award for 2009 and will now progress to the regional finals which will take place on 6th October.

In making their decision, the judges highlighted the vibrant life of the village and the many associations and activities which were on offer to all ages.   Of particular interest to the judges were the sports facilities and clubs, which had a genuine focus on providing for both young and old.  The report stated that “there is definitely something for everyone and more”

The judges were also impressed by the forward thinking ‘Garage project” which will in time house a youth centre for the area.

As the largest village in the Blackdown Hills it is home to the Blackdown Hills Business Association fostering business awareness and support.  Caring for the Elderly and disabled was clearly a priority as represented by the Blackdown Support Group.  Church activities were highlighted as important to this flourishing village, who “provided so much more than their normal duties”.

The report of the judges concluded that Hemyock was home to “what must be a most content and fortunate population.  Just look at the super web site!”

Parish Council Chairman Heather Stallard said that she was thrilled at the result and that Hemyock won the Village Award for Devon because it truly deserved too and she thanked the many people who made the village special.  She was particularly grateful for those who made presentations to the panel of judges.

Calor set up the Village of the Year competition in 1997, to help promote sustainability among rural communities.   The competition helps communities to evaluate themselves, by working out what are the unique features of their community.  And then presenting the information to a panel of judges drawn from all walks of life appointed by the company.
