Hemyock received accolades and awards (cup, plaque and certificate) as winner of the prestigious title of Calor Devon Village of the Year for 2009 at the Community Council of Devon (CCD) Conference at Teign Valley Village Hall in Christow on Thursday 21 October
Collecting the prizes on behalf of Hemyock, Parish Councillor and local Baptist Minister, Steven Reed said that “the unique qualities of our lively community were clear to the judges. Hemyock impressed them as a forward thinking and self sufficient community represented by our many clubs, activities and facilities for all ages”.

David Kinross, competition organiser on behalf of the Community Council of Devon, commented: “Our congratulations go to all the villages in this year’s competition. We were very impressed by the standard of the villages and each village demonstrated something outstanding and we were delighted to be able to recognise these qualities.”

Hemyock Parish Council Chairman Heather Stallard said “Winning the competition was entirely representative of a team effort. The presentation panel of 16 local people communicated all that was best about our village, making Hemyock the obvious choice for the judges”

As the overall winner for the county, Hemyock went forward to represent Devon in the national Calor Village of the Year for England competition, but narrowly missed in its bid to become best village in the country. The national winner is to be announced in December.

The annual competition is run by the CCD with sponsorship provided by Calor – the UK’s leading supplier of off-mains gas.   The runner in Devon up was Woolfardisworthy
