Waking up at 6am the good news .... sunshine!
At 7am Patricia could be seen putting up bunting around the Recreation Field and by 8am David was erecting a gazebo. Around 10am members of the Scout Group were putting up marquees and stallholders could be seen setting out around 40 colourful stalls. Apple AM (Taunton Hospital radio) set up the PA system which would be used throughout the day as well as providing music and a live link to the hospital. At 11am Rev David Sherwood introduced the guest of honour Chief Gbobanuyi of Okitipupa who opened the Summer Fair of St Mary's church.
Chief Gbobanuyi told the crowd how he had been honoured with the title but despite that, much to his relief, he was still only allowed one wife! In inviting people to support the stalls he said that it cost over £2,650 PER MONTH to keep the parish church open and maintain worship. 1pm heard the church bells ringing across the village as a party gathered for a wedding
Music was the theme of the day and this was provided by Jason Baxter (piano) who got the day off to a lively start, Wellington Town Silver Band, Ron White and Nigel Atkinson (accordians) and Hemyock Singers. A delightful display of country dancing was given by younger members of the local primary school. Appreciating the fine weather visitors were able to enjoy a barbeque, cream teas, strawberries and cream and a licenced bar throughout the day.
As the event drew to a close prizes for the various raffles were distributed and takings handed in to be counted. At 4pm stallholders began to pack up any remaining wares, stalls and gazeboes were dismantled and bunting taken down, litter pickers appeared and thanks to everyones help the field was cleared by 5.30pm. An hour later most of the raffle prizes had been delivered or folk from further afield phoned to be told of their success. Later that evening the amount raised was known - around £1,500 - a fantastic sum - but expenses still have to be accounted for.
No spectacular displays as shown by the Red Devils last year but as many people were heard to say the day had been a true village fete with good weather, food, music, stalls and company. Many thanks to the stallholders and to all those who came along and supported the event
