A standing ovation by 200 people saw the final day of the Rev David Sherwood's ministry in the Upper Culm Valley draw to a close.
David's final service was taken at the parish church of St Mary's, Hemyock where 160 people from the United Benefice of Hemyock with Culm Davy, Clayhidon and Culmstock along with visitors from further afield celebrated Holy Communion. Following this a 2 course hot lunch was held at the Parish Hall where the congregation were joined by friends from other churches in the locality.
Following gifts to David's wife and daughter, presentations were made to David by Hemyock Baptist Chapel, St Mary's Tower Room Club with the United Churches giving David a Sat Nav and cheque. Another mystery gift is on its way from abroad. MC, David Bawler (Warden - St Mary's) told the assembled guests that despite searches throughout the country and on the internet the gift had only been found to be available in Switzerland a couple of days ago. It was hoped the gift would be here to be presented to David when he is installed as Priest in Ashburton at the beginning of February.
In an emotionally charged reply David, supported by his wife Lizzie, thanked everyone for their gifts and support during his time in the Culm Valley.
