A party of parishoners from the Upper Culm Valley travelled to Ashburton on 2nd February for the Licensing Service of Revd David Sherwood as Priest in Charge of the Ashburton and Moorland Team of churches. The villagers received a very warm welcome to the church of St Andew where there were some beautiful floral arrangements.

The service was taken by The Bishop of Plymouth who caused much laughter during his sermon, whilst seating was reserved for the visitors in such a way that most were able to receive the Eucharist from Rev Sherwood which was much appreciated.

Following the service refreshments were served in the Town Hall to the visitors and members of the other seven churches which David will minister to. Gifts, which  were not available at his farewell lunch at Hemyock, were presented  to David. These included a framed certificate and bell from the bellringers plus a leather folder which had only been found to be available in Switzerland just before Rev Sherwood left the Culm Valley. Laughter was caused when in making the presentation David Bawler, Warden, St Mary's, said the folder had travelled between two Swiss towns before being sent to Paris, Gatwick, Exeter, Hemyock and finally to Ashburton.

Whilst Hemyock with Culm Davy, Clayhidon and Culmstock are awaiting the appointment of a new Priest services will mainly be taken by the retired clergy who live in the area.
