Valley Arts

Up to a few weeks ago we were a part of Hemyock Singers. The members of the Society were responsible for staging the annual village play and various other public and social events. The core members of The Hemyock Singers prefer to specialise in choral and other forms of singing presentations, quite different to the type of show that the Society members are interested in staging. The decision was made to separate the interests and allow the groups to specialise in their chosen form of performing arts.

So here we are, the same people but under a new name; Valley Arts & Social Society.

We have a long tradition for putting on plays, pantos. and other shows, this will continue along with public entertainment of other forms along with social activities for the Society.

Our Objectives

The objectives are much the same as they have always been:
  • To stage shows, comedies, serious plays, pantomimes; in fact anything we fancy doing as a group.
  • To arrange dances and various social and musical events within Hemyock and the Culm Valley.
  • To encourage people of all ages and abilities to join us and join in.
  • To have social events within the Society, this will include things like beach trips, parties, barbies.
And most important to have fun doing whatever we do!  We have talked about putting on art and other media events, certainly this is something to explore and develop. Any volunteers?

Valley Arts

During April and May we enjoyed four dance workshops with Jo Elworthy, Jo taught us some moves for a line dance, the Salsa, some popular disco dances and the Charleston. As always Jo made the sessions informal and fun, the sessions were well attended and we were joined by some new faces including a few brave men!! The dance sessions culminated in a social evening with a dance theme, this was a good evening and gave us the opportunity to try some of the dances we had been learning.

Valley ArtsPlans are underway for our next autumn production, the read through and auditions will be in June, if you are interested in being involved in any way just email valleyarts@live.co.uk. We held our AGM in February and reflected on a most successful year, we fulfilled our aim to break even financially in 2009 and even made a small profit which will be used to buy a licence and scripts, to set us up for our next show. We enjoyed a full programme of events and two stage shows; we hope to build on this success and agreed on the programme for 2010.

Valley Arts & Social Club News

Valley ArtsValley-Arts have enjoyed an active and successful second year, we finished 2009 with an awards evening and Christmas Dinner. The awards: "The best overall male performance" and "The best overall female performance" were presented to Richard Shepherd and Helen Williams for their portrayal of Buttons and Beauty in the pantomime BEAUTY and the BEAST. In December the group took delivery of new staging funded mainly from a grant from Mid Devon Council. This means that Valley Arts now own more than half of the staging. Anybody wishing to hire any of our staging should email us at valley-arts@live.co.uk

Valley ArtsA Team from Valley Arts showed that they were more than just pretty faces when they triumphed in the Hemyock Cricket Club Quiz Night held in the Parish Hall on Friday 17th April 2009. Team Manager Caroline Pinder expressed her delight at the teams performance in what was a very tight contest. She was especially pleased that the rumours the Team would pass any 'Dope Testing' were found to be scurrilous in the extreme!!!

Valley Arts and Social Society - Who are we?

Valley ArtsAfter 30 years of running both choral and stage performances under the name of Hemyock Singers, the membership voted in May this year to separate into two autonomous groups. While the choral group is retaining the original name of Hemyock Singers, the stage group decided on the name "Valley Arts & Social Society".
