Archived Stories Well, do you like it or loathe it? - the new size Parish Pump that is. Comments have varied from - much preferred the smaller size to so much easier to handle; it seems to have even more adverts (they help pay costs); it's harder to find news items they seem to be all over the place to lovely to see so many different things intermingled. A case as always of not being able to please all of the people all of the time! It seems as the village has grown so has the Pump. I'm sure Tony Grosse had no idea the magazine would reach such proportions when he began it many years ago. We are grateful to the various contributors that bring the news to us in each issue and of course the editorial team who painstakingly spend time putting everything together.

Archived Stories The talk on the 8th April will be given by Bob Musgrove on the story behind Inn Signs and the talk on 13th May by David Greenfield on Brunel's work in the SW.

On 11th February Ron White spoke on "In and Out of Africa". He outlined the work he was doing with Scripture Union of Uganda, from 1971, to further daily Bible Reading and encourage Christian Union groups in secondary schools by visits and conferences. He expected this to last for about five years, but before two years were up he was visited by Idi Amin's men, one Monday morning, who said they were deporting him. Ron conjectured on the reasons why this might have been. He was held overnight in the Central Police Station and served steak and chips! His wife, Val, was able to visit and encourage him. She then joined him with their two daughters on the flight home, having been escorted to the airport by John Sentamu, now the Archbishop of York.

Archived Stories A young chap on a bicycle with a long pole went through the village at dusk switching on the streetlights. Why was the switch up near the lamp?

Our neighbour Mr Salter in Station Road, Carpenter and Wheelwright had a workshop full of wonderful wood aromas. His grizzled hair was always covered on sawdust. He ground up pigments with turps and linseed oil to make his own paints.

My Ayres on the opposite side of the road kept a shop selling general goods including childhood treasures such as toys and penknives.

Archived Stories It was with great sadness that Hemyock Singers heard of the death of Norman Leighton just before the Pump went to press. Norman was a fine musician specialising in the violin. Prior to moving to Hemyock he had been invoved with numerous chiors and orchestras. As a past Musical Director of Singers his wisdom, knowledge and dry wit lightened many a rehearsal. We send our love and deepest condolences to his wife Alice.

Archived Stories About 6 years ago we welcomed the first ringing bride to the ringing room. Tower captain Lin Holway and her daughter, Emily, rang together before Emily's wedding. Now we have had the first ringing bridegroom. Our latest learner Tim Barton only started to ring last autumn, and we were delighted that he had progressed enough to be able to ring for his daughters, Lydia's wedding.
